There is a wide range of stinging insects that call Las Vegas home. Here is a look at the different types of stinging insects that you are most likely to see in residential areas:

• Honey bees: Honey bees are usually about one inch long and have yellow and black striped bodies covered in thin hairs. Their heart-shaped head is slightly smaller than most other bees. 
• Africanized bee: Also known as "killer bee," this bee looks almost identical to a honey bee. The only difference is that these bees have slightly smaller bodies than typical honey bees and will usually measure about a half-inch long.
• Carpenter bees: These bees are usually about an inch long and have plump bodies. Their thoraxes are usually a light brownish-yellow color with thin hairs, while their abdomens have no hair and are shiny and black. 
• Hornets: Bald-faced hornets are the most common type of hornet found in Las Vegas. They are about 1 ½ inches long and have black and yellow bodies. You can typically find them in their large aerial nests that look like they were made out of paper.
• Yellow jackets: This is a species of wasps that is usually about ⅝ of an inch long and has black and yellow striped bodies. They typically have yellow legs and a pinched waist between their abdomen and thorax. 

Most stinging insects on this list have unique physical characteristics that allow you to easily tell them apart. However, if there are two species that do look alike, they will each have unique behaviors and habits that will help them stand out.
